Weekly Year Level Updates

Dear Prep Families,
We have had another wonderful week of learning in Prep and are so proud of how engaged and enthusiastic the students have been!

Reading
This week in reading, students have been enjoying the story “I Wanna New Room.” We have been exploring the events in the story and discussing the beginning, middle, and end. Students have also been sharing their ideas about the character’s experiences and making connections to their own lives.

 Phonics
In phonics, we are focusing on the letter ‘V’ and the /v/ sound. Students are practising identifying, writing, and using words that begin with this sound to support their reading and writing development.

Writing In writing, students have been sharing their opinions by writing about their favourite foods. They are using sentence starters such as “I like…” and giving reasons for their choices, helping to build their confidence in expressing ideas.

Numeracy
In Numeracy, students have been completing benchmarking tasks to support their learning growth. We are also learning about ordinal numbers (such as first, second, third) and using these to describe position and order in fun, hands-on activities.

Inquiry
Students continue to build their understanding of working together by practising turn-taking, sharing, and respectful listening during group activities.

Reminders

  • Swimming continues every Thursday. Please ensure all swimming items are clearly labelled and that students come dressed with their bathers under their uniform.
  • Reading satchels and homework books are due back every Friday.
  • Students should complete one numeracy activity from their homework grid each week.
  • Our first excursion is now available on Compass. Please log in to Compass to provide consent and payment.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

Kind regards,
The Prep Team

Dear Grade One Families,

We’ve had a fantastic Week 3 in Grade One, with students continuing to build their confidence as they learn new skills across all areas. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and engagement in the classroom each day.

 Reading

This week in reading we have been focusing on the story The Boy and the Elephant and looking at how we can understand a story by only looking at the pictures. The students have also been learning about different parts of a story, including the beginning, middle and end.

 Phonics

In phonics our focus has been on the long /e/ sound. Students explored different ways this sound can be represented, including /ie/, /e_e/, /ea/, /ee/, /y/, /ey/ and /e/.

 Writing
Students have begun drafting their own narratives, ensuring they include a clear beginning, middle, and ending. They are also starting to think about how they want their audience to feel at different points in their story.

 Numeracy
We have started learning about length and how to measure accurately. Students have been describing and comparing the lengths of different objects.

 Inquiry
Students have begun taking action following their learning about how fairness guides our actions. As part of this, they are compiling their knowledge into a personal “toolkit.”

 Reminders

  • Homework and take-home readers should be returned each Friday.
  • Please pay for the Hands on Science incursion via Compass as soon as possible. This is due by Monday, 18th May.

During Week 6 (Monday 25th May to Friday 29th May), we will be running Survival Week at swimming. Your child will need to bring clothes to swim in that are labelled during this week.

 Hats
Hats are no longer required at school. Students should have taken them home by now. You will be notified later in the year when they are needed again.

 Book Fair
The Book Fair will be held in the Learning Lab from Tuesday 19th May to Friday 22nd May. Families are welcome to visit and purchase books from 8:30–8:50am and 3:15–3:45pm each day.

Dear Grade Two Families,

Phonics

j, ge, dge, g sound

Numeracy

Dear Grade 3 families,

In Reading this week, we started exploring a new mentor text “The Gentle Genius of Trees” and focused on the features of a nonfiction text type. We also analysed how the author moves the text along by first introducing the topic, then explaining it further using cause and effect as well as leaving the reader with a message at the end. Students have been thinking readers by continuing to justify their thinking using evidence from the text and making connections to their world.

In Writing, students have continued writing Haiku poems. They revised and edited their Haikus against a checklist and took it through the writing cycle in order to publish it.

In Numeracy, we have been learning to read time to the nearest minute. Students have also been using mini clocks to represent the time and writing it in different forms.

In Unit of Inquiry, students have begun looking into their personal inquiries. They brainstormed on a topic they would like to advocate for and have come up with questions they would like to ask their interviewees in order to hear different people’s perspectives on issues they care for.

Reminders:

  • The swimming program has begun. Please remember to pack your child’s swimming bag on their allocated days.
  • 8 June 2026 – King’s Birthday Public Holiday. No school.

Disability Inclusion

Kororoit Creek Primary School is excited to introduce Disability Inclusion, a new approach to help us improve support for students with disability and build a more inclusive school for all our students.

Inclusive schools have better outcomes in learning, engagement and wellbeing for all students.

Disability Inclusion will help our school better understand what our students need to help them learn, through:

  •   a new funding model with more investment
  •   a new strength-based process called the Disability Inclusion Profile to help identify the student’s needs and required adjustments
  •   more training and coaching for teachers and school staff about the best ways to support student learning.

A new funding model with more investment

The new funding model provides additional investment that our school can use to support many students including those with autism, learning difficulties and more.

This additional investment will provide more support for students with disability, including students who haven’t been eligible for individual funding through the Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) in the past.

Our school can use this funding for a range of activities including

  •   more training and professional development for teachers and school staff
  •   getting expert advice about disability
  •   hiring teachers or other staff to help plan and deliver changes for students
  •   equipment and resources to support learning.

The Disability Inclusion Profile

The Disability Inclusion Profile will help us find out more about your child’s strengths and needs. It will inform personalised funding allocations, help us plan student learning and any changes a student may need to better learn.

The new Disability Inclusion Profile process will replace the Educational Needs Questionnaire used as a part of the current PSD.Disability Inclusion img 300x282

As we transition over the next three years, families of students who are part of the PSD will be asked to attend a meeting to complete a Disability Inclusion Profile.

People who know your child will be involved in the meeting, along with an independent, trained facilitator who will help our school and families complete the profile.

If your child is part of the PSD, we will work with you to find the most suitable time to complete their profile.

The profile will also be available to a broad group of students with high needs.

We will identify students who are not currently part of the PSD, who may benefit from a Disability Inclusion Profile. If we consider that your child’s education will benefit from having a profile, we will contact you.

More training and coaching for teachers and school staff

Disability Inclusion will give more teachers and support staff a better understanding of disability and how to respond. This could include access to:

  •   more professionals in schools who are experts in disability
  •   coaching
  •   professional learning
  •   evidence-based guidance and resources
  •   scholarships.
